Viking Longboat Races
Started in 1963, the World Championship Viking Long Boat Races has seen a
variety of characters and teams slugging it out for a winning prize. First
prize is £500, Second prize is £250 and Third prize is £150, though it does
cost each team £60 to enter. Held
in Peel Harbour, the large brown viking style boats challenge the strength
and power of each team member. The large oars have to be worked together
if the boat is to make a fast lap. Some teams race for charity and others
for a night at the pub. There are always a few teams who dress up for the
event and amuse the crowds with viking hats, cow masks, etc.
