Entries Closed 19 June 2003 Entries have now closed for this year's Manx Grand Prix, practising for which
starts eight weeks tomorrow (Saturday August 16). They show a continuing great
interest in competing over the Snaefell Mountain Course, both in the modern
machine classes and the events for Classic bikes.
The final totals are not yet available, as the organisers, the Manx Motor Cycle
Club, sift through and decide how to ratify the numbers for the individual
races, some of which are over-subscribed. It is likely
that all nine races will
enjoy at least equal support to that of previous years.
Among the entries, at least 12 previous winners are included. They are Chris
McGahan, Alan Bennie, Paddy Reid, Eddie Byers, Graham Burden, Roy Richardson,
Barry Davidson, Jason Griffiths, Bud Jackson, Dave Hughes, Bill Swallow and Pat
Sefton.
Other prominent names intending to compete include Kark Wilkie, Darren Burns,
Frank Rutter, Alan Oversby, Alex Donaldson, Raymond Porter, Philip Gilder, Bob
Price, Alan Jackson, Graham Rhodes, Mark Linton, John Loder, Tony Myers, Davy
Morgan and James McCullagh.
Female entries include Maria Costello, Eleanor Forrest, Gail Musson and Carolyn
Sells.
There is also a prominent field from the Isle of Man. Among those likely to be
in the hunt are Graham Burden, Paul Corrin, Tommy Clucas, Richard Coates, Paul
Duckett, Jason Griffiths, Norman Kneen, Dave Madsen-Mygdal, Graham Taubman,
Barry Wood, Derren Slous and Derek Whalley.
A number of foreign entries have also been received. They include Manfred Vogl,
Stefan Druschol, Franz Glauser, Richard Numair, Iwan Spicher, Jochen Trockel,
Reiner Trockel, Thomas Wyss and Alex Tori-Mori.
An interesting entry in the Newcomers' race is former international moto-cross
and enduro rider Arthur Browning from Great Barr in Birmingham. He was a regular
competitor on works Greeves machines in the great days of the ITV World of Sport
scrambles and represented Great Britain in the International Six days Trial.
Arthur has entered Bob Pearson's Jawa
Metisse in the 500cc Classic Manx Grand
Prix and states his aim is to finish in
his first Island road race, though he competed in the Isle of Man in the Jeff
Smith Scrambles at West Kimmeragh in the late 1960s alongside John Banks, Dave
Hickman, John Banks, Dave Nicoll, Alan Clough, Dave Bickers, Vic Allan and
company. More stories >>>
