First meeting of War Memorials Preservation Committee 29 June 2009 THE new Government body set up to oversee the registration and preservation of the Islands war memorials has held its first meeting. The Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee, chaired by Adrian Earnshaw MHK, has been created in line with the recommendations of a Council of Ministers Working Group report approved by Tynwald. The Committees terms of reference include: ensuring a proper registration of war memorials throughout the Isle of Man encouraging the proper maintenance and upkeep of the memorials avoiding the destruction of, or overseeing the removal of, such memorials The Committee will develop databases of war memorials and war graves, and will submit an annual report to the Council of Ministers to be laid before Tynwald. It will liaise with the Director of Planning so that the Planning Division can check for the location of war memorials when a planning application is made. The establishment of the Committee does not remove the responsibility for war memorials from local authorities. Mr Earnshaw commented: The Island has a huge number of war memorials of various types, and each one is a tribute to sacrifices made on behalf of our community. We owe it to those commemorated to make sure no memorial is neglected or forgotten. Membership of the Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee is as follows: Chairman Hon A J Earnshaw MHK, Vice Chairman Mr Q B Gill MHK, Lay Members Mr Hector Duff, Prof Roger Berry, Mr Roger Christian, Mr Bruce Kirkham, Mrs Fiona Robinson More stories >>>
