Irish TV Crew Brings Back Honeymoon Couple 49 Years Later 2 October 2009

The Isle of Man welcomed yet another television crew earlier this month together with Martin and Mary O’Donoghue who honeymooned in the Isle of Man in 1965.

The Irish Language TV channel TG4 are currently filming a series called ‘Mi na Meala’ or ‘Honeymoon’ and the programme takes couples who have been married for 20 years or more back to the location where they spent their honeymoon, to re-trace their steps and re-visit the places special to them along the way. The series has a gentle, nostalgic tone and always maintains strong viewing figures.

Martin and Mary O’Donoghue were thrilled to be back in the Isle of Man. During their honeymoon back in 1965 they had stayed in the Derbyhaven Hotel in Castletown and travelled round the Island in a Mini-Cooper, visiting places such as the Laxey Wheel, The Casino in Douglas, the Fairy Bridge and the TT.

During this visit they stayed at the Empress Hotel and revisited attractions, including Laxey Wheel and Castle Rushen, took a ride on the Manx Electric Railway and enjoyed a leisurely stroll along Douglas Promenade.

Hon Martyn Quayle MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, met with the television crew and presented Martin and Mary with a gift of a ‘Moods of Mann’ book, Manx tartan scarves and a Sword of State paperknife to commemorate their visit. He said:

‘I am delighted that Martin and Mary O’Donoghue chose to revisit the Isle of Man and that TG4 filmed here as part of their ‘Mi na Meala’ series. It is a great opportunity to showcase our beautiful Island to viewers in Ireland and I hope it will encourage them to visit.’

The couple enjoyed their brief visit to the Island and plan to return with their friends for a longer period next year.

The programme will be broadcast on TG4, which is on the Sky network, at 8.00pm on Thursday 5 November, and repeated at 8.10pm on Saturday 7th November. It may also be available to view on the TG4 website www.tg4.ie after that date.
