Around 200 riders to contest Isle of Man Youth Cycling Tour 3 April 2009

Around 200 riders from the British Isles and Europe are expected to contest the Isle of Man Youth Cycling Tour which takes place this year over the early May Bank Holiday from May 1st to 3rd.

The Youth Tour is open to riders in the Junior and Youth categories and is again sponsored by Sleepwell Hotels with further backing from the Department of Tourism and Leisure. One of the organisers, Peter Kennaugh, said: ‘The event is now in its sixth year and has become one of the most prestigious stage races in Great Britain with many past competitors going on to become World, European and British champions – as well as Olympians.’

One of those who has got to the very top after receiving valuable experience via the Youth Tour is Mr.Kennaugh’s son, Peter junior. He won the youth side of the event in 2005 and followed this up two years later with victory in the junior section.

Peter has been representing Great Britain at the World Track Championships in Poland where two of his team mates were Manx riders Mark Cavendish and Jonny Bellis – the latter, now a professional, also coming to prominence following his exploits in the Isle of Man Youth Tour. Another former competitor in the Island was Pim Lithgard from Holland who also represented his Country in Poland.

Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, said his Department was exceptionally pleased to continue its association with the Youth Tour. He added: ‘The event boosts our early season visitor arrivals by way of competitors, officials and spectators but also provides an opportunity for the top Manx riders to test themselves against the best in Britain, as well as Europe.

‘When we see what has been achieved by Peter Kennaugh and Jonny Bellis we can eagerly anticipate what is destined in the future for some of the competitors in this year’s race at senior and international level.’

Friday May 1st sees the start of the tour with a short prologue time trial on Douglas Promenade. The scene moves to the Peel-Poortown-Switchback area on Saturday morning for Stage Two when the junior competitors race over a 100km course. The youth riders cover various distances over the Ellerslie Circuit at Marown in the afternoon.

The north of the Island is the place to be on Sunday (May 3rd) as the Tour concludes with the juniors facing a testing 100km course around Bride, finishing on Ramsey Promenade, while the youth riders end their event with racing around the Promenade.
