Flu Update 4 1 May 2009 The World Health Organisation flu alert level is still at level 5. The advice to the Islands public over the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend remains essentially the same. People who develop flu symptoms within seven days of visiting affected areas should ring their GPs number and if out of hours will be put through to the Meds service. They should stay at home and limit their contact with others. Relevant symptoms are fever above 38 degrees, cough, sore throat, muscle aches. For general flu information Island residents are able to ring the free NHS helpline 0800 1 513 313. The public is asked NOT to ring emergency services with flu-related enquiries. There are no plans to restrict travel to or from the Isle of Man. If your travel plans include visits to other parts of the world, you should look at the specific advice for that area on the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website www.fco.gov.uk/en/. Nor is there any need to restrict or cancel public gatherings. The public is also advised that there is no increased health risk from pork products. Arrangements are being finalised for the distribution of advice leaflets to all households in the Island next week. Arrangements are also being progressed for a local helpline to be put into place at the appropriate time. Information, advice and useful links are available at a dedicated Isle of Man Government website www.gov.im/swineflu which is also accessible through the News Highlight link at the bottom of the Isle of Man Government homepage www.gov.im General good hygiene, including hand washing and covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, can help to reduce the transmission of flu virus.
