Improved Access to Southern Hills 21 September 2009 The Forestry Amenity and Lands Division, with assistance from the Manx mountain biking fraternity, has upgraded the route which runs along the western side of Cronk ny Arrey Laa from the top of the Eary Cushlin Pack Road to The Sloc. This work has greatly improved access, safety and the risk of erosion and it was put to the test straight away when 950 bikers undertook the gruelling End to End cycle race on 13th September. The route, which is currently the only permissive cycle route across the Divisions hill land, has benefitted from sensitive drainage, partial reinforcing and the building of boardwalks to avoid sections of mire. Chairman of the Forestry Division, Brenda Cannell MHK said, this is a great boon to access and sustainability and shows what can be achieved with collaborative work between the Department and recreational users of our land. It was fantastic that around 25 people were able to give up their time and turn out on the particularly wet and misty bank holiday of 31st August to help move timber up the hill for our staff to build a section of cambered boardwalk. The results are a huge benefit to walkers and cyclists alike. Mountain bikers are encouraged to make use of the Departments estate, where permitted. Bike access is allowed in plantations with the trails laid out in South Barrule Plantation being particularly popular. Riders can also follow the many greenway routes which cross the hills. The permissive route at Cronk ny Arrey Laa combines with nearby greenways to create longer off-road routes and the Department hopes that similar collaborative work can be undertaken in the future.
